Played in Art Among the Stars 2025
Parallel Universe No. 3
2011
cello composition
5 min 17 sec
The Parallel Universe song cycle has interrelated themes inspired by the concept and possibility of parallel universes. Composed with an aleatoric structure, when performed live, the songs are familiar to previous renditions and yet sometimes contain new elements.  The original recordings are documentation which contain evidence of a new discovery of tone color on cello, and more recently in my musical research, another new cello technique and tone color has also been discovered.  The song cycle was composed after a retreat to a more ecological lifestyle in the countryside, where the stars were very apparent, and philosophical meditations on what is constant, and what is construct, what is mutable and within our choice.

I am an artist sometimes inspired by theoretical science, who sometimes seeks a scientific explanation for my discoveries. For the most part I am a cellist, a composer, an improviser, an artist with a focus on music, a musical researcher, and an educator with an interest in promoting the development of creativity. At UW, my musical research has been supported by Huck Hodge and Melia Watras.
